Hero vs Honda Sales Battle Intensifies in FY26: Gap Widens Slightly but Competition Remains Tight

Hero MotoCorp retained its lead over Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India in FY26, selling about 6.07 million units domestically versus Honda’s 5.75 million. The gap widened slightly compared to FY25, driven by Hero’s continued dominance in commuter bikes like the Hero Splendor. Honda remains strong in scooters but faces rising competition from TVS Motor Company. Globally, the race is much closer, with less than a lakh units separating Hero and Honda, signaling intensifying competition in the two-wheeler market.

The rivalry between Hero MotoCorp and Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India continues to shape India’s two-wheeler market in FY26. While Hero MotoCorp has retained its leadership position, Honda remains close enough to keep the competition intense.

Hero MotoCorp vs Honda FY26 Sales Figures

Hero MotoCorp ended FY26 with approximately 6.07 million units sold in the domestic market, maintaining its top position. In comparison, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India reported around 5.75 million units, trailing by just over 3 lakh units.

Interestingly, this gap has slightly widened compared to FY25, when Hero recorded 5.61 million units and Honda stood at 5.33 million units a difference of about 2.86 lakh units. After a phase of narrowing margins, the gap appears to have stabilized again.

Hero’s Continued Dominance in Commuter Motorcycles

Hero MotoCorp’s strength remains firmly rooted in the commuter motorcycle segment. The iconic Hero Splendor continues to deliver massive volumes, especially in rural and semi-urban India. At the same time, Hero is pushing into premium motorcycles, mid-capacity segments, and sporty scooters, aiming to expand beyond its traditional base.

Honda’s Scooter Leadership Faces Growing Competition

Honda continues to perform strongly in the scooter segment, but its earlier dominance has been challenged by competitors like TVS Motor Company and Suzuki Motorcycle India. In the entry-level motorcycle space, Honda is still working to close the gap with Hero. Models such as the Honda Shine 100 have contributed to growth, but Hero’s scale remains unmatched.

Hero’s Electric Push with VIDA

Hero MotoCorp is also strengthening its presence in the EV space through its sub-brand Vida. The brand has seen strong growth in FY26, with registrations nearly tripling year-on-year, signaling positive momentum in the electric mobility segment.

Global Sales: A Much Closer Race

When exports are included, the competition tightens significantly:

  • Hero MotoCorp: 6.47 million units
  • Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India: 6.37 million units

This reduces the gap to less than 1 lakh units globally, making it a near neck-and-neck contest.

TVS Motor Company Emerging as a Strong Challenger

TVS Motor Company is rapidly scaling up and has already surpassed Yamaha Motor Company in global rankings. The company is targeting 6.8–7.2 million units in FY27, which could intensify competition further for both Hero and Honda.

Conclusion

Hero MotoCorp continues to lead India’s two-wheeler market, but the margin over Honda is no longer as comfortable as before. With Honda closing in and TVS accelerating its growth, the Indian two-wheeler landscape is becoming increasingly competitive heading into the next financial year.
